East of Our Youth, West of Our Future

Alexander Iglesias, Helena Ernst & Jonah Saffran-Johnson

About

East of Our Youth, West of Our Future unfolds as a constructed short story, shaped through the work of three emerging artists: Alexander Iglesias, Helena Ernst, and Jonah Saffran-Johnson.

Curated by Iglesias, the exhibition brings together images drawn from each artist’s debut projects, forming a fragmented narrative of youth—one that moves between presence and memory, clarity and disorientation.

The work reflects adolescence not as a fixed moment, but as something unstable and ongoing. A state shaped by movement, risk, intimacy, and uncertainty. Moments blur into one another—what is lived and what is remembered begin to overlap.

There is a sense of immediacy throughout, but also distance. A recognition that even while something is happening, it is already slipping away.

Together, the images suggest a condition of growing up in the present: where small, fleeting moments carry weight, and where meaning is not always clear, but deeply felt.

Frame 1A presents this exhibition as part of PhotoCarmel 2026, a regional celebration of photography organized by the Center for Photographic Art.
