Grain in the Frame brings together sixteen photographers working with film across 35mm, medium format, and large format.
The exhibition is less interested in film as nostalgia than in the conditions it creates for making a photograph: limited exposures, delayed results, material choices, and an acceptance that some part of the process remains outside the photographer’s control.
Across the work, film operates differently. For some artists, it is tied to the darkroom and the physical construction of a print. For others, the negative becomes the beginning of a hybrid process. What connects the photographs is not a single aesthetic, but a willingness to work within a medium that asks for decisions before certainty.
The images move between landscape, portraiture, architecture, observation, and chance. Some are quiet and exacting; others depend on accident, grain, movement, or the particular behavior of a camera or film stock. Together, they resist the idea that analog photography is defined by a look.
Instead, Grain in the Frame considers film as a way of working: one that makes the act of choosing a frame visible, leaves room for uncertainty and keeps material process close to the image.
