Self Fragmented

A self-portrait does not have to explain who you are.

It can withhold. Obscure. Divide. Suggest. It can show a hand instead of a face, a reflection instead of a body, a shadow, a gesture, an empty room, or something that feels like evidence of a person without showing the person completely.

Challenge Lab 02 asked photographers to make a self-portrait without treating identity as something fixed or easily contained in a single image.

The challenge was to work with fragmentation: what is visible, what is missing, what is concealed, and what remains just outside the frame. Rather than trying to summarize the self, the photograph could hold contradiction, ambiguity, distance, or uncertainty.

You are not one thing. Prove it.

A reflection. A cropped body. A room you have just left. An object you keep close. Movement that interrupts recognition. A face partially hidden by light, glass, fabric, or shadow.

The photograph did not need to reveal more. It needed to make the idea of a complete self harder to believe.
