Unremarkable

Not everything that catches our attention arrives looking important. Some things sit at the edges of daily life: a chair left outside, a wall, a utility box, a stain, a doorway, a discarded object, a patch of light, or something we pass often enough that we stop really seeing it.

Challenge Lab 03 asked photographers to make one photograph of something unremarkable.

The challenge was not to turn the ordinary into something grand or beautiful. It was simply to stay with something that might normally be ignored and decide that, for one frame, it was worth looking at.

Photograph it like it matters. Because it does.

The responses moved in different directions. Some photographers noticed objects, others surfaces, structures, traces of people, bits of humor, small disruptions, or things whose meaning came almost entirely from the act of paying attention to them.

What connected the photographs was not a shared style or subject. It was the decision to stop.

To look at something that might otherwise have passed without becoming a photograph at all.

One image. That was it.
